The draw for the Fifth Round of the 2014 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup was conducted today, as Fourth Round teams learned their potential opponents if they advance. The United States Soccer Federation held the draw this morning in Chicago as the competition goes into uncharted territory for Round 5, which is scheduled for June 24-25.
According to TheCup.us records, this is the first time in the history of the tournament that five rounds will have been played prior to the Quarterfinals, making it the largest tournament in the Open Cup’s 101-year history.
The draw is done on a regional basis to minimize travel, and the home teams are determined by coin flip, assuming both clubs applied to host and meet the federation’s minimum venue standards.
With Round 4 approaching, there are a number of storylines as three amateur clubs (PSA Elite, Orlando City U23s, Laredo Heat) will attempt to eliminate a Major League Soccer team and become the first amateur team to advance beyond the Fourth Round in the Modern Professional Era. There a number of potential Round 5 matchups, including the Richmond Kickers and DC United, an all-Texas battle, and the Los Angeles Galaxy, if they win, either having to play at Carolina for the third year in a row, or play rival Chivas USA.
Another intriguing pairing is if the Chicago Fire are able to get past the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, they will face either their rival Columbus Crew or the NASL’s Indy Eleven, led by former Fire GM Peter Wilt, the architect of the club’s four Open Cup titles.
