for those of you keeping score, nobody knows how the draw was made, and why 2nd place finishers were included. even more of a mystery is how three 2nd place finishers are hosting 1st round games while 2 state champs are on the road.
the Regional cup commissioner is a NY guy, and both NY teams have home games. the National cup commissioner is club chairman of UGH, and they have a home game as a state cup loser. go figure?
The 2nd place teams were included at the Region I meeting in January. Too bad for Erie as they were originally agreed to play in May and don’t know if they can play now it’s in April (due to them using college kids). Too bad.
Interesting.
This entire process has a lot of people baffled. So many teams fought extremely hard for the title of open cup state champions, and to see some of those teams have to travel on the road in the first round of regionals while their respective runners up potentially get to play at home, is highly unjust. I am not sure that I am even in favor of 2nd places making it through, but either way it just makes so much more sense to AWARD the winners a home game.
This has to be one of the shadiest and dumbest draw I’ve ever seen. What’s the point of having a state knockout tournament if the loser still goes through to the regional tournament? Why are several runners up hosting first round games while two state cup winners are on the road? They completely got it all wrong this year. Half the teams that were allowed to enter the regional tournament as runners up are garbage. Well done with this one.
I guess that answers the question about whether the NPSL will get their own dedicated slots that they asked for.
Of course this is corrupt. I’m sure Sal Rapaglia and his corrupt crew has his criminal hands in this proces
I guarantee the reason they are including the runners-up is because some of the teams with influential officials did not win their State Championship this year (UGH, Aegean Hawks, etc.), super shady if you ask me. Also, somehow those two Runners-Up, in addition to others, got home games while their respective state champions have road games first. This makes absolutely NO SENSE.
Here is the reason given for the hosting situation:
“The first round host team has been decided by previous years placement and
if they either hosted or needed to travel the last time they were in the
cups. Previous State entries also received preference over new State
entries for home field for the first round. Previous history of the last 3
years is being used.”
Who cares about the previous years of the competition. This should be based on this year’s results. I don’t care how those teams did in 2007, seriously? Just admit it buddy, it’s completely fixed and they just want their clubs to get through.
In looking at that quote…..as I said, makes no sense. Why reward teams that did not win their state championship? Historical trends are good for just that, history. Nothing else. Teams play in the here and now. It became such a joke that even Maryland did not crown a champion. That is just plain ridiculous.
also, with both the Open and Amateur Cups going to 16 team regional draws, that is potentially 8 games added to already busy league schedules, on top of the fact that these guys are all AMATEUR players and it is difficult to make that kind of time commitment while working/in school.
While I don’t agree with the NPSL teams being entered automatically, they could have had a perfect draw of 8 if they just left the state losers at home and included those teams.
Best of luck to everybody this weekend.
